Manufacture of graphene platelets

  1. mechanical cleaving of graphite (i.e. HOPG),
  2. unzipping of carbon nanotubes along their axis,
  3. intercalation of graphite powder followed by its exfoliation (delamination), however, without preliminary oxidation,
  4. intercalation followed by oxidation of powdered graphite and its exfoliation. Exfoliated GO is then reduced to rGO.

GO synthesis

Few layer graphene oxide can be prepared on intensive oxidation of powdered graphite involving either the Brodies, Hofmann, Staudenmaier or Hummer method.

rGO synthesis

Few layer reduced graphene oxide is available through an intensive reduction of GO with, for instance, hydrazine or hydrogen. Generally, production of rGO from GO requires very strong reducing agents applied in either chemical, electrochemical thermal or photothermal procedures. In chemical synthesis either hydrazine, hydroquinone, sodium tetrahydridoborate and other non-toxic, “green” reagents are in use.


GO is available in the scale up to 1 kg monthly with a modified Hummers method.

It was developed within the R&D activity of the NANOMATERIALS LS Enterprise and belongs to its intellectual property.

The production scale can readily be expanded on request.
